Ever wonder what the faculty and staff at the Pollak Library are working on? The “What are You Working On?” blog column (borrowed from the National Archives) aims to highlight some of the exciting projects we are working on, and profile our talented library team.
Meet Natalie Wood, our Reference and Communications student assistant.
What is your name and student job title?
Natalie Rose Wood
I am the Reference Student Assistant and Library Communications Student Assistant.
In what section or unit of the Pollak Library do you work?
For Reference, I work on the first and fourth floors of the north side. For Library Communications, I work on the second floor of the south side behind Library Administration.
What is your student job in a nutshell?
As the Reference Student, I assist the Reference Librarians in anything that is required of me. I do anything from retrieving their mail to copying papers to major projects. My library related duties include tidying the reference books (cleaning, shelf reading, and re-shelving), stocking the materials at the Reference desks and in the instruction rooms, and updating Reference materials.
As a Library Communications Student Assistant, I assist our Marketing and Systems Librarian, Colleen Greene, with blogging (using WordPress), updating our Pollak Library news webpage, and posting to the Pollak Library Facebook page.
What are you working on right now?
I am currently preparing signs to be set up around the north side fourth floor making students aware of the new Reference desk. I am also working on upcoming blog and Facebook posts to inform students on things they should know about Pollak Library.
How long have you been at the Pollak Library?
I have been employed at the Pollak Library since January, 2014.
Have you held any other jobs with Cal State Fullerton?
Before I became the Reference Student, I worked on the fourth floor of the north side in AVCMC, the Audiovisual and Curriculum Materials Center. Working with two other students, we were in charge of many collections; the Donoghue Children’s Literature Center, Curriculum, Text, Juvenile, Video and Audio Recordings, and the Learning Resources Display Center. Cleaning, shelf-reading, and additional projects assigned by my supervisor, Roberta Valentine, were included.
Do you have a favorite accomplishment at the Pollak Library?
My favorite accomplishment at Pollak Library is working at Pollak Library. The passion I have for libraries is presented in my work. I love my job, and I enjoy working in multiple departments, leaning as much as I can.
What is your major/degree and/or graduate field, and intended date of completion for your current degree?
I am a Communications major with an emphasis on Public Relations. I will be graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Spring 2015. My next step is earning a Library and Information Sciences Master’s Degree from San Jose State University. I am expected to graduate from there in Spring 2017.
What career/s are you interested in?
As a public relations major, I would enjoy working for a non-profit organization, specifically one involved with wildlife conservation or protecting the environment. I may enjoy public relations, but I love libraries. Becoming a librarian at an academic library is my top career choice. Libraries are my second home, and I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
Has your student work at the Pollak Library helped prepare you for your future career field?
Yes, it has. The work I am doing in Library Communications will look great on my resume for a public relations career. I have learned so much more about libraries, other then just books, since I have started working here. My wide range of experience will help me pursue my goal of becoming a librarian.
What are your passions or interests outside of work and school?
In my spare time, I love to read. I read mostly fiction, specifically fantasy and science fiction. I enjoy playing tennis and swimming on occasion, after competing in both sports all 4 years of high school. Watching movies and my favorite television shows have always kept me entertained. Baby-sitting, dog-sitting, and house-sitting are opportunities I truly enjoy. I have strong passions for animals, the environment, and libraries.
What is the last book you read, or the last book you loved?
The last series I read, and loved, was “The Matched Trilogy” by Ally Condie.
