Special Collections: The 1984 and 1932 Summer Olympics

Posted in Academic Communities, Faculty, General News, Library Collections, Library Research, Students, University Archives, and Visiting the Library

With opening ceremonies kicking off the 2012 Summer Olympics tonight, we thought it timely to showcase some of the Summer Olympics treasures that make up part of Cal State Fullerton’s University Archives and Special Collections (UAASC) in the Pollak Library.

In 1984, Cal State Fullerton served as an official venue for the Los Angeles Olympics, with Titan Gym housing the team handball competition. The University Archives and Special Collections received one of the signed team handballs, a medallion, an official flag, and other ephemera.

While Cal State Fullerton did not serve as a venue for the 1932 Summer Olympics (the campus did not even exist back then), the University Archives and Special Collections acquired at a later date photographs, programs, tickets, and other ephemera from donors and from an Olympic Games exhibit held in the Library.

The captions say 1936 but should be 1932. The pictures look very nice. Best wishes, Sharon
